Feed Rate Calculator (IPM)
This feed rate calculator helps determine the linear cutting speed of a tool in inches per minute (IPM).
Feed rate is calculated using spindle speed (RPM), number of flutes, and chip load per tooth.
Formula:
Feed Rate (IPM) = RPM × Number of Flutes × Chip Load
Using the correct feed rate is critical for proper chip formation, tool life, and surface finish. Too low feed can cause rubbing, while too high feed can break tools.
Example:
If RPM = 1000, flutes = 4, and chip load = 0.002 in/tooth,
Feed Rate = 1000 × 4 × 0.002 = 8 IPM.
When to use this calculator:
Use this calculator to determine the correct feed rate based on spindle speed, tool flutes, and chip load.
Machining tip:
Proper feed rate ensures efficient cutting—too low causes rubbing, while too high can damage the tool.
