Hardness Conversion Calculator

This hardness conversion calculator helps convert between HRC, HRB, HB, and HV hardness scales used in machining and material inspection.

Different hardness tests use different methods:

- Rockwell (HRC, HRB) measures penetration depth

- Brinell (HB) measures indentation diameter

- Vickers (HV) measures pyramid indentation

Because each test method is different, there is no exact formula to convert between them. All conversions are based on standard reference charts.

Formula:

No direct formula exists. Conversions are based on ASTM E140 standard tables and interpolation between known values.

Example:

For 36 HRC:

HB ≈ 330 – 350

HV ≈ 340 – 360

For 220 HB:

HRC ≈ 20 – 21

When to use this calculator:

Use this tool when comparing material hardness across different standards, especially in machining, heat treatment, and material selection.

Machining tip:

Always refer to the original hardness test when precision is critical. Converted values are approximate and should be used for estimation only.
